Paper Chase
2017
“Extreme Conditions” — The Paper Biennale, Eretz Israel Museum, 2017 (curator: Anat Gatenio). Paper, plywood, wood, motor, laser cutting, construction. A magical show of three-dimensional animation on a turning wheel, based on the principle of the zoetrope — a rotating device that creates the illusion of movement by displaying still images in rapid succession. Here the wheel is built upward, like a Ferris wheel, carrying square panels that hold white, organic-looking paper forms resembling plant life. Flashes of light produce the illusion of continuous growth — filling and emptying, appearing and disappearing. The preoccupation with nature, growth and decay echoes Hoffman's earlier work. Her training as a graphic designer and illustrator has expanded into drawing in space through varied means, taking surprising new turns each time.
